Have you been curious about adding a skylight to your home, but don't know much about it? If so, you'll likely want to know about the different types of skylights that you have to pick from.

Opening Skylights

One option is an opening skylight, which actually opens as the name would imply. This type of skylight typically uses a solar-powered motor so that you do not have to get on a ladder to open and close the skylight, which makes it convenient to use.

A neat feature of a solar-powered skylight is that they can actually have rain sensors built into them so that the skylight automatically closes when it starts to rain. Since there is a high chance of water coming through an open skylight during a rainstorm, this feature helps ensure that it stays dry in your home at all times.

Fixed Skylights

A fixed skylight is not going to open at all. It will look very similar to the opening skylight with how it is elevated off the roof, but it has a tighter seal around the window since there is no way to open it. People often select a fixed skylight when they don't feel the need to get a breeze through the skylight, likely because they already have central air conditioning installed in their home.

However, there are two types of fixed skylights to pick from, which are curb mounted and deck mounted. A curb-mounted skylight is going to sit higher off the roof and is ideal for roofs that have a lower pitch. You likely will not see the skylight from the street level because of this, so the amount that it sticks up will not be an issue.

The other option is a deck-mounted skylight, which sits closer to the roof's surface. It is going to have a nicer appearance on your home due to it having a lower profile, and is ideal for roofs with a higher pitch.

Sun Tunnels

A sun tunnel skylight has a round dome on the roof, with a shaft that feeds down into a diffuser at the top of the ceiling in a room. Many people use a sun tunnel when they want to add natural light to an interior bathroom or utility room that does not have any windows. Rather than leave the ceiling open all the way to the top of the roof, the sun tunnel looks more like recessed lighting.
